The AMS Centre was established by Professor Gerry Byrne in UCD in 1993. The mission of the Centre has been defined as follows:
The mission of the AMS Centre is the development of an understanding of the fundamental mechanisms in the production of functional surfaces by subtractive manufacturing processes.
Our research addresses the need for surfaces to specifications and tolerances 'beyond the state-of-the-art' in advanced engineering materials for environments that involve tribo-mechanical, thermal, electrical, chemical and bio-chemical interactions. Understanding of the fundamental mechanisms in the production of the surfaces clearly provides a basis for modelling and simulation and therefore prediction of the effect of process parameters on key metrics such as surface finish and inte ...grity. We therefore regard the 'engineered surface' as a key output of our research both fundamental and applied. Notwithstanding our focus on the fundamental mechanisms, the design of the production system (extending to 'design for manufacture') and the machine / tooling are also included in the scope of our research.
